Spam, I Am

Ever since the wonder of electronic mail was borne from the ether of cyberspace, we, the users, have been plagued by spam ...the electronic equivalent of junk mail.

Since virtually everyone I know simply throws junk mail away ...without even looking at it, I've always wondered -- (since there's obviously some monetary benefit from the practice), just who are these people who respond to this deluge of circulars, brochures, and all the other unwanted debris.

Likewise, who are these people who open junk email ...especially in light of the potentiality of viral infection, the releasing of worms, or the invitating in of trojan horses. No, I don't want a larger penis ...well ...let's not go there. Let's just say, I'm not interested in those ads. And sure, I'm gonna respond to some anonymous stranger offering to f*ck me tonight. Now, would I be likely to buy medication from someone who camouflaged the email as something else, say, a response from someone with whom I'd recently corresponded? And yet, the deluge persists.

My ISP (Earthlink) has done a marvelous job of curtailing this flood of spam, undermining all the myriad tricks used to entice us to read this unwanted dreck. Again, there must be some people who read and respond it otherwise the practice would not still exist.

Now here's the funny part, that which prompted me to write this post. You see, I hardly get any spam anymore. Kudos to Earthling and all the others on the front lines combating this menace. And yet, when I check my email and find nothing there ...or when I retrieve the mail and find the box is empty... something in me feel a little sad. My initial reaction is to wonder if the server is down. I miss the junk mail, the spam. You see, for me anyway, a little bit if it is okay.

With regard to physical mail, a few circulars and the occasion catalog is really not that bad. In the absence of any "real" communication, I might even skim through a magazine or two. A small amount of this "fluff" provides a buffer from what otherwise would be just bills ...since no one actually writes letters anymore.

Regarding email, I never, repeat never, even consider even opening email I can't identify and am confident is authentic. However, I do miss the opportunity of deleting it. I find I'd rather delete a few solicitations, then receive no email at all. We screamed "no more spam", and it seems as if that's what we're getting. (Heh-heh) Be careful what you wish for.
